You have five minutes before class. You suddenly remember a story that might work. Do this.

The five-minute story build

1. INTENT — why am I telling it?

2. MAP — what is the key event?

2. MAP — what changed?

3. SHAPE — what context is essential?

3. SHAPE — what can I cut?

4. FACILITATE — where can learners enter?

4. FACILITATE — what will I ask?

5. TEST — does it connect, show change, remain relevant, and contain enough interest to hold attention?

The 30-second story decision

Before telling an unplanned story, ask:

Check what is true right now

Does it support what we are doing right now?Is there a change?Can I tell it without a long explanation?Is it appropriate for these learners?Do I know what I will ask when I finish?

If you cannot answer yes to most of those questions, capture the story and develop it later.
